Hazen Farm
Davie County
138 acres Conservation Easement
An exciting project
completed during 2001 in Davie County was made possible by Bob and Pam
(Anderson) Hazen. Their 138 acres is nestled between the
perimeter of Cooleemee Plantation (1800 acre protected property) and
the Yadkin River where it intersects with Highway 64.
Like an
overflowing cornucopia filled with natural bounties, the Hazen tract is
yet another site LTCNC is very proud of bringing under
protection. The property boasts magnificent steep cliffs
overlooking the Yadkin River, with over 2000 feet of frontage.
Characterized by gentle rolling hills intermingled with wide open
plains and hardwood forests, the property serves as a major habitat for
a variety of wildlife common to the Piedmont region. In fact,
while Maximilian Merrill, Conservation Planner for LTCNC, was working
on the Baseline Inventory for the property he indicated, "I saw six
deer, two red tail hawks, three wild turkeys and a variety of migratory
birds. That place is truly amazing."
The only item that
parallels the amazing natural setting of this land is the wonderful
story of how it came under protection. After donating the
property a couple years earlier to another charity, the Hazens had come
to learn that it was going to be clear-cut of all its beautiful
hardwood trees. In an effort to prevent this from happening, the
Hazen family actually bought the land back at its fair market value and
then sought out the LandTrust to ensure that such an event could never
happen to such a special piece of land.
